Bread Sticks and Memories
This day, thirty three (roughly!) years had led to this day and yet so many hundreds of years before were part of today's story as well. This day, the washing of feet, the meal of the Passover (Matthew 26:30) leading to the first celebration of the Holy Communion and the taking away of the Hope of the world.... wow, what a day!
The solemn stories should not be hidden from our children, they will know joy and sadness and make connections that we don't imagine but equally we each need to be sensitive to what is going off in the lives of the people around us. Perhaps today you want to wash each other's feet, to offer an honouring of the person - what I like about you. I personally hate anyone touching my feet and this is always my dread when someone suggests this. Thanks, I appreciate and value the thought, but I'll hold onto the imagination of it rather than reality!
For many years we would gather with friends and share a simple Passover meal and my children remember it with laughter and a kind of reverence. It held within it a holiness that bonded us closer and today we will miss our missionary friends who used to laugh at the way we said 'herbs' (with a 'h'!)
But tonight would equally be a great time to grab some juice and make some bread on sticks and toast it over a fire, thinking together about your own stories of God being with you, journeying with you and changing your life.
Bread Recipe (for sticks)
1 cup self-raising flour
1 tsp sugar
1 tbs butter
3/4 cup milk
pinch salt
Rub the butter through the flour until it is all crumbly.
Mix the salt, sugar and a little milk at a time until it forms a dough.
Divide into two pieces and roll into a snake shape. Wind around a clean, dry stick. Hold over the campfire to cook.
